If I Had A Hammer

Stained walnut platform, oak, steel, and music.

2014

A miniature two inch hammer sits on a black wall mounted shelf. Inside the shelf the song "If I Had A Hammer" performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary plays on loop. The song, originally composed by Pete Seeger, became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement and others. The song's imagery of the hammer, long used by many cultures as a symbol of power, is conflicted by the juxtaposition of a hammer so small it becomes utterly nonfunctional.
